Influences

Jazz is American music but has many influences from other cultures.  You will notice its complexity from the NYC jazz performances which originates from the fact that it has lots of characteristics and identities. The Origin of the fascinating Music

When you hear the NYC jazz performances, you will feel that you travel through time and experience magic with the music and understand its history.  Jazz music caught the attention of the audience at the end of  19th century through Scott Joplin. His music style was known as ragtime. It was during this time that people are immigrating and moving to the United States, particularly New York. The immigrants brought along different types of music which includes quadrille and waltz. The variation of music that was brought along by the immigrants paved the way for Scott Joplin to mix it with the black community’s music and created the ragtime jazz.

Combining the Music with Blues

The Blues music was combined with the classic New Orleans music at the start of 20th century.  This paved the way for the formation of the Jazz Community of New Orleans. The Blues Genre became popular in the city in no time. The singers of the Blues Music were responsible for the rapid popularity of Jazz music in New Orleans. The music was also wholeheartedly accepted by New York and Chicago. This started the Era of Jass Music.

The Characteristics of Jazz Music                                     

The three characteristics of Jazz that makes it unique are improvisation, syncopation, and melodic freedom. The most important characteristic of Jazz is improvisation because it is what makes it unique among other genres. There are many that say that improvisation is wordless singing. Nonsense syllables are used in improvisation which is also known as scat singing or scatting.

You will enter a musical universe with Jazz music because of its vastness. There are so many types of Jazz music and it’s difficult to name all of them. The types of Jazz that are worth mentioning because of their popularity are soul jazz, Latin jazz fusions, free jazz, Dixieland jazz, acid jazz, gypsy jazz, and Bossa Nova jazz.

There are so many prolific jazz artists that have been produced throughout the years.  The well-known jazz artists are well respected by the music community because they are the reason that jazz is in the global musical map. Another reason why they are so highly regarded is that they inspire people from different parts of the world and different walks of the life. The popular jazz musicians worth mentioning are Max Roach, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, and Thelonius Monk. Another jazz artist who helped promote the music around the globe using his voice Louis Armstrong. Today, Jazz is much appreciated worldwide because it is innovative, stylish and distinctive.
